Using a Rubber Bulb Rubber bulbs are used in conjunction with pipets to transfer liquids from place to place. Using a Spatula Spatulas are used to transport and distribute dry chemical compounds. Spatulas are used most often when weighing out chemicals on a balance because they allow you to collect very small quantities of the chemical at a time. Using a Funnel Funnels are used in chemistry for the same purposes that they are used in everyday life...to prevent spillage. Using Clamps The clamp to the left is a test tube clamp. Clamps are used to allow a person to be "hands-free" during the progress of a reaction. Clamps such as the one shown are used to handle test tubes that are hot or to prevent slippage. Using a Striker Strikers are used to start Bunsen burners. The striker itself is constructed with a rough surface positioned opposite to a piece of flint. When the arm of the striker containing the flint is pushed back and forth over the rough surface sparks are produced. These sparks when created in the presence of a flamable gas such as propane will start a fire or for our purposes a Bunsen burner.
