The purpose should be several well constructed sentences dealing with the major topics of this experiment, consider both conceptual and technique based topics. The procedure section should site the lab manual and also note any changes made to the procedure in the lab manual.

The data section for this experiment should include the six worksheets that you completed during the course of the laboratory experiment.

The calculation section should include sample calculations for determining the formal charges and molecular weight (MW) for each molecule.

The conclusion section should be several well developed paragraphs and cover the following information: a) Identification of each of the molecular model unknowns; b) A discussion of how you determined the polarity of each molecule and what contributed to that polarity; c) A discussion of which molecules were capable of resonance and why.

Answer the following questions:

  1. Describe how formal charges can be used to determine the best structure for a molecule.

  2. Although most molecules follow the octet rule, there are some exceptions. Give two examples of atoms that break the "octet rule" and explain why this is possible or necessary for these atoms.
