Attendance: You are required, on time at every scheduled session. If you must miss a class, do not call the TA, the Instructor, or the Chemistry Department. Simply arrive at the next class with appropriate written proof of your excuse (examples: note from doctor, copy of summons to appear in court, newspaper article about the snowstorm in Georgia in which you were stranded). If you arrive late to class, it is at the TA’s discretion as to whether or not you may start the lab.

TWO UNEXCUSED ABSENCES WILL RESULT IN AN AUTOMATIC GRADE OF "F" FOR THIS COURSE.

Safety: You are required to bring safety goggles to the laboratory beginning January 20. Failure to wear safety goggles in the laboratory will result in being sent home with an unexcused absence. Study and obey all the laboratory safety rules. You must pass a safety quiz in order to pass this course. Additional safety considerations are on the back side of this page.

Grading: Grading in this course is based on three major areas: Laboratory Reports, Quizzes/Homework and Laboratory Performance. Letter grades will be awarded based on the mean and standard deviation of each TA’s sections.

Laboratory Reports will be graded on a 20 point scale, and are due at the beginning of the laboratory period following the experiment. Lower grades will be given for late reports, and no points will be given for a report more than one week late.

Quizzes will be based on experiments previously performed and will be given in the lecture period. Each will be worth 20 points. Pre-lab assignments will be given as homework and will be due at the class lecture preceding the laboratory.

Laboratory Performance will be evaluated on a daily basis. Approximately one half of the Performance points will be assigned to the bound Laboratory Notebook. Other factors evaluated in the Performance grade include: 1) Safety; 2) Preparation; 3) Neatness, especially in work areas after clean-up; 4) Organization and efficient use of laboratory time. Note that preparation leads to organization and efficiency.

Failure to check out will result in an automatic grade of "I" for this course. Any equipment missing will be charged to the student's account.

Objective: This course is designed to offer science and engineering students an opportunity to apply some concepts and principles of chemistry in a supervised laboratory setting.

Laboratory lectures for sections 1-7 will precede each experiment on Monday evenings from 6:45 - 8:00 PM. Experiment lab times will follow on Tuesday.

Laboratory lecture for sections 8-17 will be on Tuesday evenings from 6:45 to 8:00. Experiment lab times will follow on Wednesday and Thursday.

¹Additional Safety Considerations

Any laboratory experiment should include proper disposal of hazardous waste. Never discard any waste down the drain unless directed to do so by the TA. Instead, use the waste containers provided for 1046L and replace the lid on the container when done. Report any spills to the TA immediately, and direct others to keep away from the spill. Remember that safety is everyone’s primary concern.
