String Response Problems in LON-CAPA

In string response problems, a text box is presented in which the student types a string of characters. The string must be exact, so that designing such problems can sometimes be complicated and require instructions as to how the strings are to be entered. Is an element's name capitalized? (Hydrogen or hydrogen?) What convention is used in naming compounds? (2-butanol or butan-2-ol?) Is a full name required, or just a last name? (Einstein or Albert Einstein?).

To make it easier to enter chemical formulas and reactions as strings, Guy Ashkenazi, The Hebrew University, Jerusalem, ISRAEL, has developed the "Reaction Editor" for editing strings of formulas and reactions.

String responses can also be combined with other types of responses in a single problem.

To the right are some sample problems illustrating these features. They are presented with a "New Problem Variation" button at the top to allow you to explore the many randomized variations of the problem. Your responses are not recorded, and you have as many attempts as you like.
