Dr. Steinbock grew up in Hameln, Germany and studied at the Georg August University in Göttingen. He then moved to the Max Planck Institute in Dortmund where he pursued both his Master's and Doctoral degrees under the guidance of Prof. Stefan C. Müller. During these years, he formed a strong passion for the study of selforganization and complexity in natural and synthetic systems. Basic questions include how macroscopic order, hierarchical architectures, and complex temporal behavior can arise from simple processes such as autocatalytic reactions, diffusion, and fluid flow. His research experience spans from biophysical studies of chemotaxis and morphogenesis to modern materials science. An underlying theme is how biological complexity can be reproduced and utilized in non-living systems. While focused on experiments, his work also entails model development and computations.
Dr. Steinbock is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a recipient of the Bessel Research Award. His work has been funded by the National Science Foundation (Chemistry and Materials Research), NASA, DARPA, and other national and international agencies. He joined the FSU faculty in 1998. Dr. Steinbock also (co-)organized several symposia and conferences including a Gordon Research Conference in Italy and an international workshop at the Lorentz Center in Leiden. He has co-authored over 160 peer-reviewed publications. Recent collaborators include scientists in Japan, Germany, and the UK.
