SYLLABUS

As a hydrocarbon, oil is considered an organic molecule. Oil spills are unfortunately a horrific side effect of our modern need for petroleum based goods. Even if a tanker doesn't run aground, oil residue from our cars more often than not finds its way into our lakes and rivers. We know from previous labs that oil is less dense than water and thus floats on the surface. In this lab we will learn more about the structure and properties of oil by creating a mock oil spill and then cleaning it up.
