SYLLABUS

When a metal is exposed to water and air it becomes subject to the possibility of oxidation. Oxidation converts the metal from its elemental form to that of a metal oxide. While metals are generally, but not always, shiny and maleable, metal oxides are mostly dull and brittle. For example, the "rust" you see on old cars is just the common name for iron oxide.

In this lab, we will oxidize a number of different metals using several different oxidizing agents in addition to the two above in order to observe this process of metal corrosion.
